Sun 9 Sep 07 Poringland v Taverham

There was much anticipation looking forward to first game of the season.  All hard work through training seemed to have paid off as Taverham started strongly controlling most of the play in the middle of the park.  Taverham broke down the right where Rizzo put the ball across to Luke who chipped keeper, 1-0.  Taverham took control & continued to press and excellent play by Christian using his strength to force the ball to Aiden whose shot was parried by the keeper to Rizzo for tap in 2-0.  Corner by Ollie, Luke’s header at the edge of the 18 yard box narrowly missed coming off the top of the bar. Taverham were on fire by now.  Great solo run by Luke brought down in penalty box, Elliott steps up coolly to take perfect penalty 3-0.  Just before the break Ollie puts in another excellent corner, Christian on hand to slot home 4-0 at half time.

Poringland started the second half really strongly and Taverham were still asleep when the Poringland striker had a shot which came off a Taverham head looping over the keeper, Joe who stood no chance, 4-1.  Taverham finally woke up and took control again with a surging solo run by Rizzo who kept his cool one on one with keeper and scored, 5-1.  Taverham still pressed but Poringland never gave up and had a couple of  chances but with a minute to go yet another superb Ollie corner found Christian and his great header went in off a defender to complete the scoring at 6-1.  An excellent result and an encouraging performance for Taverham, well done boys.

Man of the Match: - Luke

Sun 16 Sep 07 Taverham v Sprowston

After an encouraging start at Poringland last week, the lads came crashing down to earth by a well organized Sprowston team. In the early stages of the match Taverham took the game to the visitors only to be caught offside on too many occasions by a well marshalled Sprowston back four. Had early chances been taken a different match could have resulted.  However, it was drilled shot from outside the box that saw Sprowston take the lead against the run of play. This lifted Sprowston and their tally was doubled a short while afterwards due to too much space and respect being given by our lads. We did show odd flashes of our recent form with Ollie catching the eye going forward.

A point blank save from Joe prevented a third for Sprowston.  Joe unfortunately stopped the ball with his face and had to go off for the remaining couple of minutes of the half.  Thankfully Joe was able to resume his place between the sticks in the second half.  It was certainly Sprowston who finished the stronger in the first half and our lads were glad to hear the half time whistle so they could regroup. The Manager’s team talk highlighted a couple of areas which needed to be tightened up in the second period: namely poor marking at corners and giving the opposition too much respect.

The second half started brightly enough with some crunching challenges from Christian which demonstrated his commitment to the cause.  However, he was very much in the minority so far as our midfield mettle was concerned. The neat interplay and simple football from Sprowston carved us open again all too easily and they really gave us a lesson in team play.  In order to stop the onslaught a number of tactical changes were made but all too no avail.  We did have our chances in the second half but it was to be one of those days where the ball just wasn’t going to go in for us.  A fine display from the Sprowston keeper meant that we were denied what would have been a deserved consolation goal.  With the next opponents being last year’s champions, Old Catton, this game could be the wake up call needed.

Man of the Match – Having recently been selected for the PDC,  Christian crowned a good week with a really hard working and gutsy performance setting an example to all about never giving up.

Sun 30 Sep 07 Taverham v Old Catton

A day which was more akin to mid summer rather than late September greeted us. Unfortunately heavy rain meant long lush grass and lines which were hard to recognise in the bright sunlight. Chief groundsman and ref Mr Plumstead is available if we can offset his fees against the hire charges!!

After taking a pounding in the last match against Sprowston, the Manager was looking for our lads to show their ability to bounce back. The high flying Champions and league leaders came to us brimming with confidence but there was a unified and enthusiastic Taverham team about the place today. Could they do the unthinkable? They certainly wanted to have a good go. The large crowd certainly turned up baying for a giant killing. It was good to see Kevin Doyle back up on his feet (or crutches) after his recent ankle op.

Catton started confidently and our back line looked a little nervous with some uncertain touches. However, safe hands from Tom and excellent covering play and composure from Elliott help steady the ship. Our midfield found it hard to get to grips with the physical threat the Catton No19 posed. We did wonder whether he was supposed to be at an Under 13s match and had got lost. What was certain though was he was not lost on the pitch. Within minutes we were 2-0 down, and having won their last game 12-0, the Taverham camp feared a repeat. However, our lads rolled up their sleeves and battled which was the response the Manager was looking for. We thought we had made it 2-1 but for the Catton Assistant referee to flag for offside. As there was a Catton player on the line this seemed quite a perplexing decision but to their credit the boys continue to press the Catton goal and got their reward with a poacher’s goal coming from Rizzo.  Our celebrations were short-lived as Catton promptly went up the field to score again and finish the half 3-1 up.

The boys came off at half time knowing that they could compete with Catton and were going to give it their best shot. In a battling second half performance there were times when we matched Old Catton and they knew they were in a game. Luke and Rizzo were chasing every lost cause they could and flashes of Ollie’s magic looked certain to bring home the bacon. Our plan to get the ball out to our wide men was not materializing and much of the game took place in a crowded middle of midfield. The occasional piece of inspired brilliance such as Archie’s slide rule pass between Catton’s Left back and Centre Back and Christian’s lung bursting solo run to goal were not enough. Despite finally getting to grips with their No 19 (a crunching tackle saw Matty take the ball from him in typical robust style of our left back) and Hansen like display from Elliott, could not stem the flow of the endless Catton onslaughts. The Champions pacey strikeforce and desire to win was there for all to see and admire. Catton added another 3 goals in the second half – our only reply was Rizzo’s well taken volley which capped a hardworking performance from him.

Although our boys really did have a go in the second half you always felt like Catton could move up a gear at any point. Our attack minded full backs never really had a chance to get forward on the overlap and support our midfield but there were plenty of positives to take away from this game. Man of the Match, Elliott, capped a fine display of composure, great positioning and last ditch covering tackles after a shoulder charge in the dying minutes of the game which would have made John Terry proud, he had the confidence to carry the ball and turn defence into attack. Well done Elliott.

Thanks and credit must also be given to our match officials, Darren Plumstead and Mark Woods, who both had fine games.

Sun 7 Oct 07  Hellesdon v Taverham

Following our previous 2 disappointing results, our visit to Hellesdon saw the Manager revert back to a 4-4-2 formation with wholesale changes in the midfield. Surely our luck had to change at some point – didn’t it? However, the bounce back would have to wait for another week as Hellesdon took an early lead. To their credit our boys struck back immediately. In typical Rizzo style, he chased and hassled a Hellesdon full back and forced him into conceding possession. Rizzo moved the ball into the right wing channel for Luke to run onto. Luke kept his cool and promptly rounded the advancing keeper and banged the ball into the left hand corner. What a way to celebrate your return to your old team.

However, our elation was short lived as Hellesdon struck right back and before we knew it half time had arrived and we were 5-1 down. Hellesdon had played some good football but our inability to make a serious tackle and defend corners meant we got exactly what we deserved. Our lads seem to forgotten the Manager’s instructions to get the ball out to our wide players as soon as possible seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. To make matters worse the defensive line looked more like a line on a graph.

At half time it was time for us to regroup and get the team together in order to prevent a cricket score. With our backs against the wall, it was Archie who kept his cool and brought the lads together by shouting encouragement. The Manager seized on the moment to promote togetherness and treat the next half as though it was 0-0. The start of the second half saw play some fine approach play down the right flank and pressure the Hellesdon goal. It was a combination of poor finishing and Hellesdon’s goal leading a charmed life that prevented us adding to our solitary goal. What the manager would have given to find a four leaf clover! Whilst we were in pursuit of a goal we conceded another three, making the final score 8-1.

Team: Tom, Lewis, George, Elliott, Ellery, Matty, Dex, Aiden, Christian, Archie, Ollie, Joe H, Rizzo & Luke.

Player of the day – Archie – worked hard, looked to make the killer pass and kept the lads together.

Sun 14 Oct 07  Taverham v Wymondham
It was more like a summer’s morning than October as both teams lined up for the kick off. After a very intense training session on the previous Tuesday and some stern words from the Manager before kick off, the message was clear to the lads – more hard work and aggression was the order of the day. However, it was Wymondham which took the lead after 5 minutes. Rather than capitulate, the boys gritted their teeth and dug in and after 8 minutes Luke kept his cool after going one on one with the keeper to finish with aplomb. Game on!

Archie and Christian had listened to what was required and were really getting stuck in the centre of the park. However, it was an over enthusiastic challenge that led to a centrally placed free kick to Wymondham just outside our 18 yard box. Despite a well lined up wall, the Wymondham player stepped up and banged the ball into the top corner with Tom having no chance to get a hand to it. Again the boys stuck to their task and some fine wing play from Aiden saw some really positive play down the right wing. Aiden was back to his best and was also working very hard when we lost possession. Confidence is everything when you are striker – a point proved by Rizzo just before half time. After making a strong run into the box, he pulled his right foot back and thumped the ball to the right of the Wymondham keeper and nearly took him in with it – 2-2 and Taverham were in the ascendancy as half time arrived. The boys came to the touchline and were greeted by a rapturous round of applause from their very proud supporters – no one was more proud than the Manager. The boys had battled, shown their true mettle and their confidence was back.

It was Wymondham which started the stronger and after 7 minutes they put themselves back in front. The next 20 minutes so both teams going for it and it was Tom who was the busier keeper – pulling off the string of fine takes and saves. Although the visitors had little joy when attacking down the flanks with Lewis, Matty and George standing firm. However, Wymondham had too much success in the middle of the pitch which was enhanced by some uncertain defending and some poor touches. After absorbing what Wymondham had to through at us and poor finishing the other end, it was Christian who picked the ball up in the final third, powered past 3 players and drove the ball into the back of the Wymondham net. With only 3 minutes remaining the lads just had to hold on and earn a well deserved draw. However, the Manager must have walked under ladder during the week as with a minute remaining some uncertain defending gifted a silly goal to Wymondham. To make matters worse there was a hint of offside but sometimes when your luck is down decisions just don’t go your way.

In true football cliché terms, the Manager was “gutted” for the boys as they had given everything and come back 3 times to be denied in the cruelest of circumstances. However, he feels that all this experience will shape the boys for years to come. The boys showed the passion and tenacity needed and made the Manager very proud. They must learn how to fight back from adversity in football and life in general.

From a full strength squad it was Tom who, despite an early error, rolled up his sleeves to give a faultless display of kicking, catching and shot stopping. Not to mention some brave takes at the feet of oncoming strikers.

With the doom and gloom of previous weeks behind us we can now look forward to the rest of the season with confidence. Bring on Lakeford!

Sun 21 Oct 07  Lakeford v Taverham
After the anti climax of the rugby final it was back to action at Eaton Park on a crisp and bright morning. The pitch was in excellent condition and the boys started well and we took the game to Lakeford.  The 4-4-2 formation had good balance and our defence looked sound with important early interceptions being made. Rizzo and Luke were sharp upfront and the central midfield duo of Christian and Archie were solid. Ollie and Aiden always looked likely to cause problems but again we failed to get the ball out to them as often as the Manager would have liked. It was our boys who would have the most chances in the first half but it was Lakeford who took an early lead. As seems to the norm, we were quick to pull back an equaliser only to fall behind again shortly afterwards. Rather than allow Lakeford to go in front, it was Taverham who finished the half strongly scoring 2 more goals. The first came from Oliver who took up a good far post position following Rizzo’s low cross. This was followed up by a poacher’s goal from Luke, who has that knack of always being in the right place at the right time. Rizzo scored the goal of the game with a superb lob on the outside of his right foot making it 6 in 6 for him.

The boys’ tails were up as the lads came off the pitch and the Manager was keen to keep the same personnel in situ for the second half. However, an injury to Luke meant a quick shuffle of the pack was needed with Elliott going upfront and George moving from right back to central defence. Archie filled George’s boots at right back and Dex came on in Centre Midfield. Although the formation was still 4-4-2, the changes seem to unsettle our boys and we soon found ourselves chasing the game as Lakeford were gifted 4 goals. In a move to restore parity Elliott was moved back to centre back but a combination of ball watching and poor positional play in defence was not helped by a general lack of communication and our frequency of being second to the ball. Too many of our players watched the game go by rather than get involved. Our cause was not helped by a lack of clinical finishing and some bad luck – this was typified by Christian’s free kick which deflected off the wall and the beaten keeper watched it hit the bar. Joe added some edge to our attacking play in the last 15 minutes of the game and it was Taverham which finished the stronger. It was pleasing to see Dex apply the finish to our last attack of the game from close range.

Final result - Lakeford 7 Taverham 4.  Who needs to go to Alton Towers when you can get a rollercoaster ride every time our lads play!!!

All squad available with the exception of Lewis who had a groin strain.

Player of the Day was Rizzo who is a striker with bags of confidence at the moment. He chased every “lost cause” and was positive in everything he did.

Next match at home to Blofield.

Sun 28 Oct 07  Taverham v Blofield
We arrived just as the heavens at Taverham Junior School on a day which saw the weather change from spring like to a winter’s day in Manchester. Could this also be the day when our under 11s had a change in their fortunes? What the Manager did know was that he had received great support and encouragement from the parents following our second half mauling at Lakeford. When the chips are down you certainly find out who your friends are as Martin Jol can testify!

A call from the Chairman giving the Manager a vote of confidence is generally a sure sign that the Manager’s days are numbered. However, the call our Manager received from Chairman Bish was to prove very timely. As pace is not our greatest asset in the centre of defence our gracious Mr B asked “Have you thought of using a sweeper rather than flat back four?” The Manager really wanted to answer in the affirmative but the truth was a flat “no”.

With 20 minutes before kick off Elliott was told he was to take on the Sweeper role and true Elliott style he said “Yes no problem but can I still go up for corners?” I wonder where he gets his laid back style from. No doubt he had been to work with his Dad!!!!!! However, after some hasty drills on what a sweeper does from the Manager, our back four were ready to rock and roll. And rock and roll they did! It seems that in adversity the real fighters rise to the challenge. Not only did Elliott rise to the challenge, those around him dug in and our back line looked more watertight than Dave Brown’s brolley. (Not content with wrecking his own he promptly destroyed Mick Scarlett’s upon receipt). In appalling conditions, Tom’s handling was exemplary and his kicking lead to two Taverham goals, but his save at the end of the first half was world class – that is no understatement.

Having come off five straight defeats you would have expected the team to have been downbeat before the game. However, you could see from the warm up that our boys wanted it. Even the Manager announced it was 4:3:3 not 4:4:2 the reaction was “Yeah Ok bring it on”. Now I don’t wanna spread gossip, but I understand there was one hell of a birthday party for Ollie the night before and a few of our lads had been burning the midnight oil. Well whatever Mark and Clare gave those boys worked and I now feel this must be part of our pre-match routine. Our lads came right out the blocks and really took the game to Blofield – even our ref (who had another fine game) stripped off in anticipation! Taverham had much of the first half possession and it was Aiden who took the eye. At the warm up you could see it was his day as his aggression was plan for those to see. He clearly had the beating of the left back who really did not know how to play him. Relishing the right wing role, time and time again, Aiden took on the left back for fun and delivered some very telling crosses. The smile, which we thought had gone away forever, started to reappear on his Dad’s face as he destroyed the Blofield left side.

The midfield trio of Christian, Joe and Archie (Dex) looked confident on the ball and had space to play in. A huge kick from our keeper was thumped by Joe into the net on 17 minutes. What a goal! It was so pleasing to see Joe score as a nicer lad you will not meet. All who have watched Joe over the last few years know the potential he has, but today he showed us all just what a graceful and intelligent player he is. He has had few starting opportunities this year but by jolly was he taking this one. Our boys now had their tails up and another super clearance from Tom saw Rizzo one on one with the keeper. With a sublime side footed volley over the top of the keeper our striker continued his goal a game tally and looked a class act. Eighteen minutes played and if the sideline could have felt their fingers they would have pinched themselves.

Now Joe had already shown he has the kick of a mule and on 25 minutes, the ball dropped invitingly for him to hit and hit it he did. The keeper could only parry it out to the waiting Aiden who calmly made space in the box and with his trusty right foot drove the ball home. It was no more than he had deserved for his all action show.

The boys came in at half time and we were quietly confident, but the Lakeford second half collapse was still fresh in everyone’s minds. A like for like substitution saw Luke come on for Rizz for the second half. He was soon causing problems for their defence and was proving a handful. After 38 minutes the ball dropped for him outside the six yard box and he calmly stroked the ball into the right hand corner like a seasoned pro. Man City supporters used to say “Feed the goat (Shaun Goater) and he will score”. We know that the same is true of Luke – he knows where the net is and if you give him the chance he will bury it.

The game would not be complete without our left back making his accustomed run with the ball from defence into attack. This time he decided he would use his strength and speed to go past all Blofield’s right sided players and make it into their box. At this point, when most would have needed an oxygen tank, the most selfish thing would have been to have had a shot on goal but Matt passed to a waiting Ollie who promptly returned the favour. Sadly, with all on the sideline baying for a Matty goal, he was closed down by 2 Blofield defenders. Although not known for his skill and deft touches, our No 3 played out of his skin all day and along with Lewis made a series of goal line clearances to protect our lead.

Although Blofield had a few chances in the second half to get a deserved consolation, our defence stood strong and Tom got his first well deserved clean sheet of the season. A superb team performance - our player of the day was Aiden who really roasted the Blofield left back.

Next stop Norman in the cup – bring it on.

Sun 4 Nov 07  Taverham v Norman (Cup)
After a last week’s victory against Blofield were our lads going to string an unbeaten home run akin to the Gunners or was it just a blip? What we did know was that the boys were full of confidence and could not wait to take on Norman in the first round of the cup. The Manager retained the sweeper system and 4:3:3 formation after last week’s successful “trial”. The balance looked right from the start and our lads took the game to Norman. Our back was solid in the early stages of the game with Elliott and Lewis making some good early touches whilst Ellery made some timely interventions.

Our midfield trio looked assured with Archie catching the eye early on. Much of our attacking play went down the right but this week it was Ollie who had most of the play. His trickery saw a number of crosses go unpunished by a combination of poor finishing and good defending by Norman. It was disappointing to note that, despite the Manager stressing this at the pre match team talk, we did not switch the play to the left wing as much as we could have. Although dominating possession, we again found ourselves 2-0 down at half time mainly down to our inability to get to the “second ball”. This is more due to a lack of concentration rather than poor technique. At half time our lads knew she had had the lion’s share of the play and the chances but again poor defending and finishing had cost us.

Elliott made way for George at sweeper and Dex was on for Joe at left midfield. As the team took the field, the players and Manager were sure that we had enough to get back on level terms and win the match, but with some inspired goal keeping from Norman’s number 1, we struggled to find the net. Dex really rolled his sleeves up and made some good early touches in midfield and his game improved as his confidence rose. It was Norman who scored the first goal of the half giving them a 3-0 lead. This seemed to be the catalyst for our boys to make a late comeback. A fine move down the right saw the ball crossed in by Aiden and Rizzo applied the finishing touch to make it 1-3 (that’s 7 in 7 for Rizzo). As usual, our success had come from good wing play. The frustrating part for the Manager was our inability to get the ball to our wingers to do the damage. Again there was too much over elaboration in the centre of pitch which not only gave rise to missed opportunities but squandered possession all too frequently. This gave rise to endless assaults by Norman down their right wing. However, they were having very little success as our Number 3 was certainly taking no prisoners. His physical presence and speed was the subject of much amusement on the sideline!

Despite our best efforts we found ourselves 4-1 down with Ellery unfortunately putting past Tom. If was good to see his fellow defenders consoling their Captain as Ellery been quick to do when a similar mishap had happened to George in the game at Poringland. We all know that things like that build character in a team and will stand them in good stead for their future footballing exploits. Luke replaced Christian in central midfield and his physical strength, good first touch and desire saw him make a real impact. He helped us mount wave after wave of attack and after a run from midfield he found himself in the clear. Those who know Luke just knew he was not going to release the ball and he calmly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper – a magnificent goal and thoroughly deserved. Having started on the bench for the last 2 games and scored each time he has come on, the Manager is acutely aware that Luke is deserving of a start next time round. With 28 minutes played it was 2-4 and we needed a goal a minute. Our lads were determined to give it their best shot but the dream of extra time diminishing. With Ellery looking to make up for his earlier o.g. he made an over zealous challenge just inside our box. Referee Darren, who with lino Kevin had fine games, correctly pointed to the spot. Tom had no chance from the well executed penalty and there was no coming back from 5-2 down. A result which somewhat flattered Norman, but spoke volumes of our inability to take our chances, and avoid basic errors at the back. Possession is one thing – what you do when you have the ball is another. Next week its Norman in the league – “revenge is a meal best served cold”.

After narrowly missing out last week to Aiden’s well deserved award, our Player of the day was Matty. His never say die attitude coupled with another display of tough tackling saw him slightly edge the honour from Lewis who also had a fine game in defence.

Sun 11 Nov 07  Taverham v Norman

To mark Armistice Day there was a 2 minute silence which was impeccably observed by all players and parents.

The players were keen to avenge the previous week’s 5-2 defeat in the cup. In order to ensure we did not concede the Manager began with 4:1:4:1 formation. After a fairly cautious start it was apparent that Taverham had the edge in all areas and today’s match was going to be totally different from the preceding week. To their credit the boys stuck to the game plan of not conceding and hitting Norman on the break. Tom was largely a spectator in goal with the defence holding firm and the majority of the play in the Norman half. Rizzo had come close a couple of times earlier in the match and found the Norman keeper in fine form for the second week running.

After 20 minutes, the Manager made two substitutions and changed to 4:4:2 with Luke joining Rizzo in attack. Almost immediately we struck with 2 goals in as many minutes. The first saw Rizzo hit a rasping shoot from close range and it was too hot to handle for the Norman keeper and he could only parry it in the patch of Luke who took his chance well. Credit must be given to Christian who harried two Norman players into making a mistake and promptly set Rizzo free. In very similar fashion it was Dex this time who put pressure on a Norman player and won the ball. He then released Rizzo who took his goal well. As the half time whistle was blown the boys came in with their tails up and were well worth their win.

The Manager’s team talk was for more of the same and not let Norman back in the game. The pressure from Taverham was relentless with Aiden showing some approach play and providing some teasing crosses. However, our finishing was very poor and on another occasion could have cost us the match. In reality a score line of at least 6 – 0 should have been order of the day. We then pressed the self-destruct button again and a combination of some very poor first touches and inability to clear the ball led Norman in for their first goal of the game half way through the second half. It was to be a nail biting affair for the Taverham supporters with Norman coming close towards the end of the game and more chances going begging at the other end. However, to everyone’s relief our boys hung on to gain their third win of the season. This was without doubt another game of two halves which was not just down to the windy conditions.

The player of the day was Aiden who had an endless appetite for the ball. His offensive play was matched by his utter hard work in getting the ball back and the quality of his crosses were worthy of a better response from the recipients. Next stop Spixworth away which will be an afternoon kick off at Buxton.

Sun 18 Nov 07  Spixworth v Taverham

After getting back to winning ways last week it was time to do it all again at Buxton (Spixworth’s home ground). Although it was a bitterly cold day with a strong wind blowing the full length of the pitch, the playing surface was superb. If ever there was a day for keeping the ball on the ground this was it. Like us, Spixworth have had a mixed start with some very impressive results and some which were distinctly forgettable. We all wondered which Spixworth team would turn up as we made our way to the pitch.

With a full strength squad to pick from, the Manager opted for a 4:4:2 strategy with Tom taking his usual place between the sticks and the back four made up of Lewis and Matty as fullbacks with Ellery and Elliott as centre backs. Our midfield housed Aiden and Ollie in the wide positions and Archie and Christian in the centre. Top scorers Rizzo and Luke started up front. Dex, George and Joe were “on the bench”.

The boys kicked off with the wind in their faces but it was our team which took the game to Spixworth. Some good touches from Elliott at sweeper seemed to have a calming effect on the back four. Ellery had listened to the Manager’s pre match instructions about getting to the ball first and looked strong and commanding with some timely interceptions. Of our two wide men, it was Ollie who had most of the play and looked dangerous when he had the ball and put in some telling crosses. However, despite having 3 very good one-on-one opportunities with the keeper, our players managed to shoot straight at him and make his life easier than it should have been. As in previous weeks, we had had the majority of the first half possession but in front of goal neither found the corners or struck any of our shots with power. To make matters worse, a comedy of errors in our penalty box saw countless opportunities to clear the ball go begging and we gave Spixworth a really soft goal so that they took the lead a minute before the half time break.

As the lads came off the pitch at the interval, they looked disappointed by the score line and the Manager resisted the temptation to make any changes immediately. With constructive comments coming from our supporters, the Manager encouraged our lads to be more aggressive and win their personal duels on the pitch. Far too much respect was being given to some of the bigger players in the Spixworth team. We knew we had the talent in the squad to turn the match around and our boys did not disappoint.

Within 4 minutes of the restart Rizzo burst through with the ball from a central midfield position. He used his strength and pace to carry the ball past a pedestrian Spixworth backline to find him with a clear run on goal. Rather than having to make a snap decision, our number 9 had so much time in which to plot his course past the advancing keeper. With a cool head he entered the 18 yard box and unleashed a powerful drive to find the bottom corner of the right side of the goal.  His enthusiastic celebration was matched by the level of relief on the Taverham side of the pitch. Very shortly afterwards it was Rizzo again who struck a fantastic shot from outside the box to see the goal keeper make a mid air acrobatic save. However, the shot was too hot to handle and the ball fell behind the stranded goal keeper to drop on or just over the line. Without a flag from the linesman and despite strong appeals of a goal from a number of Taverham supporters a goal was not given. In a moment which seemed like an hour, a Spixworth defender calmly kicked the ball off the line and play continued. Very shortly afterwards the slate was wiped clean as a certain penalty in the opposite box was not given by the referee.

With 20 minutes left to go Darren crucially reminded the Manager that substitutions may be the order of the day. Archie made way for Joe, Dex replaced Ollie and Matty allowed George to move to sweeper with Elliott moving to left back. The changes seemed to act as a catalyst for what was to follow. Rather than settle for the draw it was our lads which seemed more concerned with getting the winner. On 43 minutes Rizzo did exactly what he had done a few minutes earlier – he struck another drive from outside the box and but this time the goalie could only parry it to the grateful feet of Luke who did what he does best and it was 1-2 in our favour. From the kick off you could tell we wanted it more than Spixworth with Luke, Ollie and Rizzo sprinting into Spixworth half to reclaim possession. Luke followed up his goal with a couple of half chances but the ball just would not drop fast enough on each occasion to enable him to pull back the trigger.

At the other end of the pitch our back four looked solid with some strong defending and a good shape. This enabled Lewis to get forward and support the attack down the right flank to good effect. Given the enthusiastic support from his Mum on the sideline, it was clear that our right back just dare not make a mistake! Luckily Lewis stood firm and did not have to walk home. Despite having numerous corners our deliveries were not getting past the front post and were easily dealt with by the Spixworth defence. However, on 45 minutes a corner found its way to Rizzo just outside the six yard box. He dispatched a fine side footed volley into the top corner of the net which was technically brilliant. To have resisted the temptation to smash the ball into the net must have been almost irresistible but to his credit Rizzo’s control and precision displayed maturity beyond his tender age.

At 3-1 up the game looked won by Taverham but we never do things the easy way.  Tom unfortunately handled the ball outside the 18 yard box and after a second time of asking the free kick was chipped and curled over our wall and found its way into the top corner of the net. It was a super goal and no more than Spixworth had deserved. Sometimes you just have to applaud good play and this was a perfect example of such a situation. Game on with 10 minutes remaining and Aiden gave way to the fresher legs of Ollie. Four minutes later the ball dropped to Luke on the edge of the box and he needed no further invitation as he skipped past the Spixworth defenders with great close control and promptly smacked the ball into the net to make it 4-2 to Taverham.

Our player of the day today was Ellery who was first to everything today and kept his concentration throughout a match which needed him to lead by example.  No mean feat with both our strikers grabbing a brace of goals today and Ollie looking sharp on the wing.

Sun 25 Nov 07  Jex Rangers v Taverham
On another bitterly cold day we started our route march at the Pinebanks car park and once we got to the pitch it was worth the wait. With our hosts sitting second in the league and scoring goals for fun, the Manager had issued a challenge to the team to show them that Taverham had not come to lie down. Our lads had heard the call to action and at no point during the game could any of the boys be accused of not giving their best. They were awesome and if league places were given for guts, bravery, determination and team spirit we would have won the under 11A age group with this performance alone. As a parent, let alone a Manager or Coach, it's days like these when you cannot help but feel so very proud of the boys.

In order to counteract the threat of our opponent’s two central midfield ex-Canaries, our Manager hatched a plan which was risky to say the least. His head said 5 in midfield with 1 upfront and dig in but that just would not be our way. We try to attack at any opportunity using that as the best form of defence. So it was 4:4:2 and give it our best shot. We started the match with Tom in goal and a back four of Lewis, George, Elliott and Matty. The wide midfielders were Ollie and Aiden and Christian joined in his usual central midfield spot by Ellery. With Luke and Rizzo upfront our starting line up was in place. Our Manager looked at Dex, Joe and Archie on the sideline and felt grateful for having such a talented squad at his disposal. These boys would have a starting role in many of our opponents’ teams and these boys are a credit to Taverham (today they would all show just how important they are to us).

Back to the match…..Jex showed us their attacking intentions from the start. They were well organized and had talent all the way through the team – we knew we had to be at our very best to prevent a heavy defeat. It was clear chances were going to be at a premium and the game would be decided by moments of brilliance or mistakes. Our defence looked sound with Tom in commanding form and George throwing himself at any threat that the Jex strikers could muster. Elliott was clearing up anything else that got through and our full backs (Matty & Lewis) in fine form. We were under immense pressure but although not pretty, our defenders just banged the ball away when danger came their way. We had few opportunities but we nearly had success as a monster throw was launched by George into the Jex box. It was flicked on for Rizzo to connect with it and he was disappointed to see the ball fly just over the top of the Jex bar. We would again use George’s throws to give the Jex defence all sorts of problems. Unfortunately, a defensive mix-up saw Jex get an early lead but crumble was something our team was going to do today. If not for a phenomenal save from in form keeper Tom we would have come in 2 down. Our central midfield duo of Ellery and Christian were battling like their lives depended on it and they were not giving the ex NCFC academy duo a chance to hurt us. Our wide players were not seeing enough of the ball as the Manager would have liked but they were trying their earnest to get into the game. With 10 minutes to go to half time Aiden took a heavy knock and made way for Dex who went straight into the action at right midfield. After settling in he gave another good second half performance.

Half time arrived and with Jex just leading by the single goal, the Manager encouraged the boys to start the second half as they had finished the first. The game was finely balanced with the next goal being extremely important. Aiden came on for Ollie in a straight swap at left midfield. With Jex pressing for a second goal much of the game was played in midfield and our defence was the busiest. Rizzo and Luke were spectators for much of the second half but we had our moments. Jex had made a couple of tactical changes as it was clear they were not making the inroads they were used to. This worked to Jex advantage and we began to look stretched. A penalty was given to Jex as their striker broke free on goal. Our keeper stood firm and caught the ball like it was a Tuesday training session – this summed up his confidence on the day. Not to be outdone, Jex continued to pile on the pressure and found the net following an unfortunate misplaced pass. The Jex striker accepted the invitation and coolly stroked the ball past Tom to find the bottom corner of the net.

To counteract Jex’s tactical changes the Taverham Manager sacrificed Luke and Matty and adopted a 5 man midfield made up of Aiden, Joe, Dex, Archie and Ellery. Christian moved to centre back and Elliott took Matt’s berth. The change seemed to revitalize our boys and Joe and Archie were clearly up to the challenge. The tackles that Joe put in were of the highest class and had the ferocity that the Manager always knew was there. Christian looked inspired and commanding at the back. What was a measure to counteract Jex’s attacks provided us with more offensive opportunities as we hit our opponents on the break and were unlucky not to stage a late come back. Seeing that the Jex players were now getting tired, with 5 minutes to go the Manager threw caution to the wind and went 4:3:3 but it was to no avail as Jex won the game 2-0. Our boys had done us proud and the biggest compliment was to come from the Jex Manager who reckoned we were the best team they had played so far. As they have now played all teams in the league, this was praise indeed and something we must build on in the second half of the session.

It was hard to pick a player of the day with so many really playing well but Tom was just outstanding today. His handling. kicking, shot stopping and command of his area was great and he thoroughly deserves his award. If an award was given for support then the Manager would give one to our fantastic supporters who made it more like a home game today – thank you all.

Sun 9 Dec 07  Taverham v Poringland

Following a week off we returned to action against Poringland who are currently propping up the table. After such a resilient performance at highflying Jex there was always the fear of the “After the Lord Mayor’s Show” feel about the fixture. To counteract complacency the Manager’s team talk was all about the lads treating the fixture as if our opponents were Jex! Unfortunately I don’t think our boys heard the warning.

We took to the pitch, which was more like a ploughed field, in places on a cold but bright day. The starting line up was Tom in goal with Lewis and Matty as full backs and Christian and George in central defence. Our wide midfielders were Aiden and Joe (Archie) with Elliott (Dex) and Ellery in central midfield. Upfront were Rizzo and Luke.

We start brightly enough when a pressing run from Aiden concluded with a low cross which Rizzo duly passed into the goal. Aiden continued to look lively on the right wing and the central defensive duo looked strong and decisive. Ellery showed some composed play in an area of the pitch which was more akin to World War One trenches than a football pitch. However, with an expectant crowd watching, which was swelled due to the postponement of the under 13s fixture, we proceeded to make very hard work of finishing Poringland off. Although we controlled the first half, we came off the pitch 3-1 up when, due to some woeful finishing, we should have scored many more.

When we thought things could not get any worse, we missed even more chances in the second half and there was a 10 minute spell when Poringland had our defence at sixes and sevens. Again we managed to repel any offensive action that Poringland made down the flanks with Matty and Lewis having solid games but they were prevented from pushing forward in the second half. It must be said that our defensive line will need to be better when we face league leaders Sprowston next week.  Ellery was moved back to his usual role in an attempt to organize the back four more, but still individual players lacked concentration and played the Poringland attackers onside to easily. Joe made some surging runs in the second half, but was just not able to find the final touch to give him the goal his endeavours deserved. After getting winded just before half time, Elliott came on at right back for Lewis with 10 minutes to go. That’s 5 different positions this season for Elliott who must be congratulated for being so versatile.

We added another two goals to our first half goal tally with Rizzo grabbing a hat trick and Luke getting a brace. However, on another day with more clinical finishing, our boys knew we could have scored many more and reduced our negative goal difference by much more than we did. In a game which saw 3 penalties failed to be converted (2 for Poringland) the only positive point to make about the spot kicks was Tom’s superb right handed save low to his right. Quite a week for the keeper who played outfield and scored on the hallowed turf of NCFC during the week. Well done Tom!

Frankly all spectators seemed glad to hear the final whistle sound as this must be filed under the “Could do better” performances of our season. Our Player of the Day was Rizzo who bagged a hat trick and rounded off another fine performance.

Sun 18 Dec  Sprowston v Taverham
On a crisp dry winter afternoon we had our hardest test thus far as we travelled to league leaders Sprowston. Our lads were keen to avenge the corresponding home fixture which ended 0-5 and all wanted to give their very best. In an attempt to stifle Sprowston, the Manager opted for a 4:5:1 approach with Rizzo acting as the sole striker. The flat back four comprised of Elliott and Matty as full backs and the centre backs made up of Ellery and George. Tom was in goal and the wide midfielders were Aiden and Lewis with Christian, Joe and Archie holding the centre ground.

We knew Sprowston would come at us and the boys kept their shape and managed to repel all that Sprowston could throw at us. It was good to see all in the back four getting first to the ball and showing some patient defending. Although we had our moments it was Sprowston who had most of the possession, but with a little bit more composure in midfield we could have made more of the ball when we broke forward. Sprowston came in 1-0 to the good as we again failed to clear a bouncing ball in our box. Our New Year’s resolution must be to put our foot through the ball in such situations. However, we clearly had rattled Sprowston and the game was finally balanced. This was a game which was there for the taking for both teams and our lads took to the field early to show Sprowston that they were keen to resume the contest. Sprowston had shown that that they would put players behind the ball and our Manager changed to 4:4:2 in an attempt to get back on equal terms. Luke came on upfront for Archie with Matty making way for Dex as Lewis took Matty’s position. It was great to see Dex settle in quickly in midfield with some eager tackling and fine passing.

With more attacking options we had our fair share of the play. We looked dangerous from George and Ellery’s long throws and Christian’s searching corners. Indeed it was from a corner which led to our best chance of the game when George saw his header go just over the bar. At the other end, Sprowston continued to press but our back four looked strong with Ellery and George dominating the centre ground and developing a good understanding.  Christian was at his aggressive best in the heart of the midfield and was now starting to make those characteristic midfield surges which were paying dividends. Midway through the second half an over eager challenge from Luke saw a free kick given just outside the 18 yard box. Keeper Tom set up and well organized wall, but the kick was curled into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0 to Sprowston. A fine goal which just could not be defended against. Rather than capitulate the boys encouraged each other and went looking for a goal. Rizzo stung the hands of the Sprowston keeper from an acute angle but that was as close as we got.

Sprowston had a third goal ruled out for offside due to eagle eyed lining from Rizzo’s Dad and they also wasted a gilt-edged chance minutes later. The referee, who had a fine game, seemed to see an infringement in our box that very few others did, and pointed to the spot. However, having saved the last spot kick against Poringland, Tom was looking confident and promptly made another stunning save which meant the score was still 2-0. Luke’s enthusiasm got the better of him and his late challenge was spotted by the ref, who encouraged our Manager to replace him with Archie in order to prevent a red card. This was very sporting refereeing and a perfect example of what happens when aggression is not channelled in the correct manner. Christian was pushed up front with Rizzo but a consolation did not result and Sprowston finished worthy winners. Our boys had put in another gutsy performance and had shown they can mix it and compete with the best. Another very proud moment for all the Taverham supporters who had turned up on a bitterly cold day. Our player of the day was George due to his aggressive and decisive challenging today. It was also pleasing to see his excellent positional work and no nonsense approach to getting the ball way. However, the jury is still out about the headband! Well done George.

P.S.  The Manager was really impressed with some of tactical comments being banded about on the sideline. One of our Mother’s was debating whether “it should go be ankle height or just above the knee “. It wasn’t until the end of the match when he realized the conversation was not about our tackling but related to the type of dress needed at next week’s dinner dance. With no match next week the party night will be an ideal opportunity for all parents to let their hair down and have a really great night. Unfortunately the UN has been summoned to sort out the dress code and Ladbrokes have already refused to take bets about what Darren will be wearing.

A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Sun 20 Jan 08  Taverham v St Andrews (Friendly)
With no game since 16/12/07 the boys were itching to play this weekend, especially with the last minute cancellation of last week’s fixture. When we heard our Hellesdon game this weekend was to be re-arranged due Hellesdon’s cup exploits panic set in. The Manager set about trying to find some opponents as a late replacement and St Andrews from the B league of the Anglian Com came to our rescue. Another last minute switch from the paddy field at Taverham Junior to Hinks (courtesy of Darren, Alison and Chairman Bishop) meant this came went ahead as planned.

The Manager was somewhat hesitant about today’s fixture. On paper our lads should beat St Andrews with some ease. However, the underdog often thrives on the over confidence of the so called stronger team – as demonstrated by recent cup exits for Norwich and the mighty Everton. Therefore the team talk was upbeat and the lads were told in no uncertain terms to treat St Andrews with respect but to play as normal. With a slight breeze in the air our lads took up their positions on a perfect playing surface (despite the incessant rain). Full credit must go to our Groundsman/Assistant Manager/Referee who works tirelessly for the club with little fuss.

As today’s match was a friendly it gave the Manager a chance to experiment a little. In addition it was a golden opportunity to rest certain players so that some of the others in the squad players could play a full match. Rather than tinker too much with the formation a 4:4:2 was played throughout with changes made every 15 minutes. With Tom in goal, the rest of the defensive line saw Elliott play at left back and Lewis in his usual berth of the other flank. Captain for the day, George, played in central defence with Matty. George had major surgery on his hair during the week and we were concerned that the same fate that befell Samson may affect George. However, as the St Andrew’s striker will tell you George was immense today. Our midfield central duo comprised of Ellery and Dex with Joe and Archie in the wide positions. Luke and Aiden were our strikers with Christian and Rizzo “on the bench”.

We began confidently with much of the play coming down the left with some fine link up play from Elliott, Joe and Luke. Joe was unlucky not to find the net with a close range effort. Not to be outdone on the right flank, Aiden set Archie free down the wing and a sweet searching cross from Archie went right across the 6 yard box with no one there to apply the finishing touch. What have I said about that far post? It’s a goldmine for tap ins! After Matty & George had a few touches they settled into their new partnership. Both made timely early interceptions and covered each other well in what were awkward playing conditions with the wind full in their faces. Ellery and Dex were beginning to find their feet in midfield and it was Ellery who gained possession and made a strong run from centre midfield to the edge of the opponent’s box and found Aiden who unselfishly set up Luke who coolly found the net after 7 minutes. Elliott, who had a fine first half at left back, was first to everything and distributed the ball effortlessly to his midfield colleagues. The only criticism in the first quarter of the match was the lack of steel in our tackles – luckily this was only a short term blip and normal service resumed later. Matty’s confidence at the centre of defence was growing and it was he who won the ball and turned defence into attack by taking the ball from his 18 yard box into the St Andrew’s half and set Archie away who had took up a great position on the right of midfield. Archie carried the ball and picked out Luke who returned the earlier favour to Aiden and he buried it from close range to make it 2-0 after 15 minutes. Aiden was promptly rewarded by being replaced by Rizzo who, as always, was straight into the action and added a physical presence upfront. Rizzo did well to manage his frustrations today as he took up countless great positions with well timed runs only to be flagged offside by the St Andrew’s Assistant Referee. Events like that are learning curves for any good striker and he will be stronger for it. At this point I must congratulate and thank Ryan for a faultless display with the flag on the other flank.

After 5 minutes St Andrews raised their game and tested Tom for the first time. Dex won the ball well in midfield and passed to Ellery who set up Joe who had took up a good position in the 6 yard book. It fell on his left foot but Joe used his right and the ball went harmlessly past the wrong side of the post. Without being to critical of Joe, I reckon that the majority of our boys would have done the same thing so the lesson is there for all to see (and work on!). On 20 minutes, with a bit of individual brilliance, Luke picked up the ball on the halfway line and he feinted one way and went the other leaving the defender hopelessly out of position. With still some ground to cover and only the goalkeeper to beat Luke ran into the 18 yard box and precisely passed the ball into the net. A contender for goal of the day - but more special finishes were to follow. Lewis was the centrepiece of a lovely move down the right which unfortunately broke down as we neared the St Andrew’s box. The ball was cleared by their defence and was met with a no nonsense John Smith “Ave it” return from George which was converted by Luke for his hatrick on 22 minutes (4-0). Two minutes later Elliott was first to the ball (again!) and found Rizzo, who laid off to Aiden out wide. Aiden delivered a pinpoint ball to Luke for his 4th and our 5th of the match. Although St Andrews attacked with strength our defence held firm with George making some well timed and aggressive interceptions.

Half time arrived and the Manager congratulated the boys on a great team performance. Everyone was working for each other and he warned against the danger of taking the foot of the gas and not keeping our shape. Christian came on at the heart of defence with Elliott replacing Rizzo upfront and Aiden coming on to partner him. Matty returned to his usual berth of left back and Luke replaced Ellery in centre midfield. The changes were completed by Archie and Dex swapping places. Within 2 minutes of the restart a whole-hearted shoulder charge from Matty was a little bit too strong for the St Andrews attacker and the ref. Therefore, correctly, a penalty was awarded which was promptly dispatched. Rather than drop his head this was to inspire Matty into a sterling second half display. It was not too long before we responded as Aiden sent in another tempting cross from the right for Elliott in the six yard box. Rather than rely on his first instinct and take the ball first time (which he has the talent to do) Elliott decided to take a touch. The ball was cleared to Aiden out wide who returned it with interest and another half clearance found Archie on the edge of the box who hit it first time with venom and the ball flew into the back of the net on 39 minutes. What a super goal to cap a great performance by Archie who did the simple things effortlessly. Our seventh was not long coming as 2 minutes later Elliott displayed some clever footwork and set up Aiden for his second of the game.

Anyone who knows Christian will be aware that he would not have liked watching the first half on the side line and he was keen to make an impact at centre back. He was on hand to show his strength, speed and calmness in clearing up anything that St Andrews threw at us on the counter attack. Rather than squander possession he sprayed a fine long ball to Dex on the right wing who confidently carried the ball and delivered a telling cross which led to a corner. Christian was not done yet as he made 3 trademark surging runs turning defence into attack and only a tranquilizer dart was going to stop him. Rather than do too much which has been the Manager’s criticism in the past, Christian also punctuated his driving runs with some perfectly weighted passing to our strikers who were sadly caught offside a bit too often for our liking. He capped an excellent half with a rasping drive from the edge of the box which found the corner of the St Andrews’ net making it 8-1 after 44 minutes. Before this we had had some success on the left as Matty and Joe linked up well and our left back managed to get a shot on goal which lacked any real power or conviction. It was not all one way traffic as Matty and George made showed some determined defending with strength and athleticism for all to see. Tom also made a fine save to keep St Andrews at bay and Lewis was doing a great covering work with some clever positional play.

On 55 minutes Matty won the ball on the left flank and carried it over the halfway line. He played a lovely one-two with Joe who passed a perfectly weighted return into Matty’s path. Unlike his previous effort Matty cracked this shot into the bottom left hand corner of the St Andrews goal to make the final score 9-1. Our supporters were not sure whether the celebration was better than the goal but at least the Manager got an easier ride home than normal!

A great team display from the lads today. This sets us up nicely for our next fixture with Wymondham where we need to be at our very best. Today’s player of the day was Luke with 4 well taken goals – one of which was a real delight to witness.

Sun 10 Feb 08  Blofield v Taverham
It was great to return to action on a wonderful sunny day which could not have been more different than last weeks’ wintry weather. After a lengthy lay off it was great to welcome back Ollie into the squad for today’s match. Matty was also there watching and will be back soon.

Prior to the game the boys were encouraged to continue just as they did against Wymondham. Our opponents today were Blofield, who were just below us in the league and were quite capable of taking all points if we were to underestimate them. We lined up with Tom in goal, Lewis and Elliott as full backs and Ellery pairing up with George in the centre of defence. Our midfield compromised of Aiden and Dex on the flanks with Christian and Archie in the middle. Luke and Rizzo were our strike force.

We started brightly with Tom launching the first of a number of booming kicks which caused Blofield problems all game. It is credit to report that Tom has worked on his biggest weakness at the start of the season to make it one of his major assets. This time Luke got on the end of the massive clearance from Tom and was unlucky not to make more of the opportunity. Moments afterwards a superbly taken corner was met on the full by Elliott and Blofield we blessed that they had put someone on the line to save a certain goal. Christian was getting stuck in the midfield, Dex was showing some impressive forward play on the left with Aiden attacking well down the right.

Another chance went begging in the first 10 minutes as a throw from George found Rizzo in the box but his shot went the wrong side of the post. After taking a knock in the warm up, George was clearly struggling and after 11 minutes he had to come off. This meant reshuffling the pack with Christian moving to centre back and Dex coming across to centre midfield. Joe took up his usual left midfield berth and made an instant impact. Aiden produced a deep cross from the right and Joe drifted in at the far post and met the ball full on the volley. It was immensely pleasing to see it crash into the back of the net as pre match we had discussed ghosting at the far post and hitting the ball first time. As always, Joe had listened and delivered. The beam on the face of Kevin, club’s Coaching Development Officer, was a bright as the sun. At the last training session he had concentrated on shooting which clearly had paid dividends – well done that man!

We were dominating the game but had to work hard not to let Blofield back in the game. Aiden was chasing back to keep tabs on the dangerous Nat and was tracking him whilst looking the most likely to unlock the Blofield back line. Lewis was not only snubbing out Blofield’s attacking advances down our right but was getting into some good positions once Tom retrieved the ball. Those runs do not always catch the eye but really help the team to counter attack effectively. Luke used his strength to shoulder off a Blofield defender and create himself an opening which he saw just go past the post. It was Luke again who flicked on another huge kick from Tom towards the Blofield backline. As there were 3 defenders in attendance the ball should have been cleared with ease but they did not count on Rizz for company. At a time when his confidence is low in front of goal he gave himself a massive shot in the arm. From about 5 yards behind play he raced towards the direction of ball and used his strength to pressure their centre back into making a mistake. The ball bobbled free and the keeper had to come out and collided with his defender. As they both lay on the floor, Rizzo calmly slotted the ball into the open goal. The weight had lifted off his shoulders and the relief was there for all to see. You cannot keep a good player down for long especially when he chases lost causes for fun!

As we came in at half time 2-0 up we were confident that we would add more as Blofield looked like a spent force. Their back four looked nervy and we were absorbing all they could throw at us and we were controlling midfield. Now comes the “hands up I got it wrong” bit. With the game there for the taking and adding to our goal difference in our sights, the Manager went for 4:3:3. Ollie was introduced on the left wing with Rizzo at centre forward and Aiden on the right wing. The back four remained unchanged but the midfield trio was now Luke (centre) and Archie and Joe in the wide berths. All credit to Ken, the Blofield Manager – he had seen that we were overrunning midfield and had put 3 in the centre and 2 out wide with their danger man moving inward. Blofield came out and had a real go. We appeared nervous or over confident (or both!) and lost every 50/50 challenge in the first 10 minutes and were second to everything – no one was inspiring or even having a good game (apart from Tom who made a couple of super saves to keep us ahead). After 10 minutes, we reverted back to 4:4:2 and the confidence flooded back and we were back to attacking Blofield rather than vice versa.

Joe passed intelligently down the left for Ollie to chase and the little man danced round the keeper to the bye-line. He delivered a fantastic ball which he pulled back to Christian with the goal at his mercy. This was pleasing as we had discussed at the pre-match chat. However, Christian uncharacteristically could not make the killer touch and the ball went wide. We were now managing to get forward but were disappointed by the number of times were caught offside when many of the decisions looked questionable. As with last week’s similar experiences, it is commendable to report that the lads kept their cool and accepted the decisions rather than waste energy complaining about something they could not change. The game was further punctuated by some superb handling by Player of the Day Tom, and more colossal punts to take the pressure away from our goal. One of which was ran onto by Rizz but just as he took his shot the ball bobbled up and the shot troubled the linesman more than their keeper! Just before the end of the game Christian treated us to one of his lung busting power dribbles down the right wing which began on the halfway line but ended near the corner flag. Had a free kick been given for the foul on his rather than a dubious offside who knows how it would have ended as 3-0 looked certain.

As the final whistle sounded the boys greeted another victory in euphoric style. We knew we had not played at our best today but to score two goals without reply to our nearest rivals says a lot about this squad. Next week its Norman and hopefully more points to help us up the league.

Sun 17 Feb 08  Norman v Taverham
Kick off was delayed due to the pitch at Sloughbottom Park being frozen. A good decision by the referee, which was to be first of many he made on the day. The lively surface and strong sunlight gave both sets of players plenty to think about throughout most of the game. Our pre-match team talk was all about not letting Norman settle when they were in possession and to concentrate on passing and moving when we had the ball. Getting first to the ball was another area which the boys were encouraged to focus on.

Although nothing was said to lads prior to kick off, a win for us today and a victory by the league leaders over our nearest rivals, Hellesdon, would see leapfrog them into 5th place. Having already comfortably beaten the fourth place team, Wymondham, today’s match could be a focal point for the rest of our season.

Our starting line up today was Tom in goal and a back four of Elliott, Ellery, George and Lewis. Wide midfielders were Aiden and Joe with Christian and Dex taking the centre ground. Luke and Rizzo took their usual place up front.

It was Taverham who settled the quickest. An early throw from Elliott was expertly cushioned back from Dex. Elliott skilfully sent a fine through ball to Luke who ran onto it and let fly and warmed the advancing keeper’s hands - a fine stop after only 2 minutes. This keeper had previously been a thorn in our side in the two previous games with Norman this season – today was to be no different.

Ellery showed an early desire to get first to the ball and was matched by George who controlled the ball and sent his clearance forward for Joe to hit first time, but the keeper was up to the challenge. Not to be outdone Dex was showing some great strength in the centre of midfield against some pretty physical opposition. After a scary moment in our box when wild kicks and bouncing balls were the order of the day, normality resumed and Luke found the ever eager Aiden out wide. A lobbed deep cross to the far post by Aiden nearly paid dividends as had been the case last week, but the ball went harmlessly out of play.

Elliott was showing composure on the ball and following a good first touch played a simple ball to Joe to turn defence into attack. Shortly afterwards the breakthrough came as Rizzo showed good strength to dispossess one Norman centre back and place a through ball to Joe who had taken up a good possession between their right back and other centre back. After confidently declining Luke's request to pass, Joe skilfully placed the ball with the outside of his right boot in the far corner to make it 1-0 after 13 minutes. That’s 2 goals in as many games for Joe.

It was now Christian’s chance to shine as he showed great desire to win back possession and set up Rizzo, who took his shot a tad early and saw his shot go past the post. Aiden then sent in a pinpoint centre for Rizzo who merely needed to make the right connection in the 6 yard box, but was unfortunately found their keeper’s knee.

Lewis was calmly going about his defensive duties and giving Aiden licence to roam, but showed their left midfielder he meant business as he put in thunderous (but fair) challenge. As last week, his early movement to the flanks when Tom regained possession was a factor which helped us shape our counterattacks. On the other flank Elliott took the opportunity to demonstrate another fine first touch with an excellent follow up pass to Luke who shot a bit too early. Aiden had been a constant thorn in the side of Norman in the first half and was tracking back relentlessly. With 10 minutes remaining Aiden took a breather and made way for Ollie. The change seemed to upset the rhythm of the team and we looked uncertain and Norman were getting more into the game.

Ollie made us all wince (having recently been sidelined with a broken arm) as he put in a strong tackle on his marker. The ball bobbled free to Rizzo who put in a searching cross but we could not make the best of the opportunity. Just before halftime Christian delivered one of his trademark corners which was met on the full by George, who was unlucky to see the keeper repel the ball with yet another fine save. At the other end Tom was commanding his box well and was handling exemplary. His distribution today, as last week, was excellent.

As we came off at half time it was clear we were overall charge but we were making it hard for ourselves. This game was to won or lost by OUR actions in the second half – it was that tight. We started the second half strongly with another early corner. Dex made way for Archie in central midfield and as with the earlier change this seemed to upset our game. We were losing our grip on central midfield as we were mis-timing headers, interceptions and getting out-muscled. Elliott again showed some excellent approach play and was enjoying getting forward. However, after a ball was lost further up field we were caught square at the back and Norman were back on equal terms. They then hit the post and soon afterwards made it 2-1 to them. In an attempt to get back to basics, Matthew (after returning earlier than expected from breaking a finger) went to left back and Lewis made way for Elliott at right back. After a strong challenge and a shoulder charge 2 minutes later it did not take long to realise that Matthew was not too concerned about that finger. He was back in robust fashion!

Normal service was resumed as Rizzo’s strength took him clear after a mammoth kick from Tom. His lobbed attempt did not have the commitment of his run which made the opportunity. However on 42 minutes our own Karate Kid duly converted as his left foot shot crept into the bottom of the Norman net. It was 2-2 and we were not about to sit back. Aiden, who had just come on for Joe, at left midfield managed to jink down the flank and pull back an exquisite ball for Rizzo to fire over the top. Our exasperation was short lived though, as another super corner from Christian from the left, was met expertly at the near post by Aiden on 49 minutes. To save us a nervous ending, Luke gratefully received a pinpoint cross from Rizzo and scored from a similar position as his striking partner had done 13 minutes earlier. I think both strikers will admit to not catching the ball perfectly for both their goals but they all count. Luke again had another strike which he did catch on the full but their keeper was equal to it. He or Ellery could have scored another had they called when the ball dropped on the edge of the box - now that was frustrating! Matty even got in on the action as he sidestepped a defender on the edge of the box and got it on his faithful left peg, but unlike the St Andrews game, this time his shot was comfortably saved by their keeper.

All in all a positive result today. Like the Blofield match we did not play at our best today, but to do that and still win is the mark of a good team. Next stop Spixworth at home – keep believing boys and who knows where we can go? Today’s player of the day was Aiden with his usual box of tricks and super crossing. Oh, and that headed goal Dad!!!

Sun 24 Feb 08  Taverham v Spixworth
Today’s we welcomed Spixworth on a fine and dry day. Although our visitors were sitting third from bottom before today’s match, Spixworth had drawn with Hellesdon and Catton this season and were not to be underestimated. The lads lined up with Tom in goal and full backs Elliott and Lewis. In preparation for next week’s difficult match with highflying Jex, the Manager was keen to experiment with team selection today. As Ellery was moved into central midfield to accompany Christian, Matty played alongside George in the centre of defence. Our wide midfielders were Aiden and Joe with Luke and Rizzo upfront. Dex, Archie and Ollie were “on the bench”. Our prematch training involving Rizzo and Luke was intended to help them with timing their runs and to give them more composure in front of goal which had been sadly missing over the last few weeks. In addition, it was good practice for Ryan & Luke, our new Referee and Assistant Referee (courtesy of Taverham High School) who both made fine debuts.

We began nervously as we struggled to get to grips with a determined Spixworth side. Spixworth had an early corner and shortly afterwards a great shot from the edge of our box was turned over expertly by Tom. We then showed determined defending by clearing another Spixworth attempt off the line. Of the back four it was Elliott who settled the best. He continued his good current form with some lovely touches, confident tackling and some super distribution – he was to prove our best player in the first half by a country mile. However, Joe and Rizzo were both finding their feet and pressurizing the Spixworth players into making mistakes. It was Rizzo who had our first chance but saw his shot well saved by the Spixworth keeper. Soon afterwards Elliott set up Christian who could not quite break the deadlock with his shot on goal.

Following a breakaway from Spixworth (which was snuffed out by Matty and George’s team work), Aiden carried the ball confidently and but could not unlock the determined Spixworth defence. After struggling to get to grips with the Spixworth midfield duo Ellery and Christian were beginning to get a grip on the game. It was Christian who showed strength and determination to win the ball back to put Joe into a good position which he was unable to development further.

With Spixworth the more dominant, the Manager decided a change was needed. Therefore, after 23 minutes Ollie and Archie replaced Aiden and Ellery respectively. However, shortly afterwards Spixworth took a deserved lead. Rizzo had a chance to restore parity soon afterwards but could not get enough power on his shot.

During the half-time team talk the Manager made everyone aware that the lads were just not playing to their full potential. Joe was replaced by Dex, who settled into central midfield with Archie going out wide. This was to rejuvenate us and Dex had another fine game in midfield by breaking down Spixworth’s advances and playing some fine balls through to our attackers. We were now taking the game to Spixworth and doing what we do best – passing and moving at speed with good wing play. Archie was making good progress down his flank and put in a searching cross which was not converted. Shortly afterwards,  after doing all the hard work, Aiden shot wide from close range with only the keeper to beat. However, he and Dex kept battling on and Matty was putting some great interceptions in whilst George showed some clever positional play. Lewis was not seeing too much of the ball but when he did was dealing with everything in own efficient style.

Our persistency was rewarded as Rizzo brought us back on equal terms with a cool finish. He secured his brace soon afterwards with a fine left foot drive into the corner of the opponents net from inside the box (2-1 to us). After driving through midfield Aiden set up Rizzo but he had to wait for his hat-trick as the opportunity was missed. However, Aiden then made it 3-1 from close range but our advantage was retained a while later after Tom made a magnificent finger tipped save to deny Spixworth (How important that save would prove to be!).

To cap a hard working performance and some cool finishing, Player of the Day Rizzo confidently got his hat-trick to make it 4-1. Joe came on for Christian in central midfield and Luke gave up his place for Ellery who slotted in a right back with Lewis moving to right midfield and Aiden accompanying Rizz upfront. We were in the driving seat and the “Comeback Kings” had struck again. However, we nearly gave up this title to Spixworth as we lost concentration twice from corners and they scored two quick goals. This was no more than they deserved as they just did not give up.  We managed to hang on but know we need to perform better next week as Jex look to strengthen their position at the top of the league having gone out of the cup today.

Sun 2 Mar 08  Taverham v Jex
Today saw us entertain league leaders Jex on a dry but blustery day. In an attempt to frustrate Jex, who had the wind with them, we started in a 4:5:1 formation with Rizzo our sole striker. Lewis and Matty began as our full backs with Elliott and George our centre backs. Ellery and Christian took central midfield roles with instructions to man to man mark Jex’s ex academy duo Mac & Shaun. Dex made up our third central midfielder with Aiden and Joe playing in the wide roles. Luke, Ollie and Archie started on the sideline.

Could we cause an upset today? The early signs looked bright as we adopted the game plan of not letting the Jex players settle on the ball. However, it was not long before Jex got a hold of the match and forced a number of early corners. This proved to be our downfall as per the warning signs in our previous game. Before we knew it was halftime and we were 5-1 down mainly due to some dreadful defending at corners. We must learn to stay with our players and attack the ball in the air rather than wait for the opposition to take the initiative. Pretty basic stuff but this put us in an impossible position of trying to clawback a four goal deficit. Although Jex bossed the first half we still had our moments with George forcing home a close range effort after calamity reigned supreme in the Jex 6 yard box. This was a rare display of one of our players wanting it more than the opposition during the first half – harsh but true! Other than George’s goal, our only efforts on goal were Aiden’s close range shot which was easily saved by the Jex keeper and Rizzo’s stunning shot from just inside the 18 yard box that had beaten the keeper but not the intersection of bar and post.

At half time the boys trudged off looking downhearted as they knew they had made it too easy for Jex. With the wind at our backs in the second half the Manager opted for 4:4:2 as we had nothing to lose and we decided to try and win the second half battle even if winning the game was unlikely. To the boys credit they rolled up their sleeves and had a good go (how different the game may have been if we had started like that and those calamitous corners had not been conceded). Luke came on upfront to accompany Rizzo and was full of running and tackling back, Dex was replaced by Archie and Joe made way for Ollie with Aiden swapping wings. In central midfield Christian was battling and driving forward as often as he could, but we failed to get the ball out wide as often as we would have liked. A few one-twos involving Aiden on the left was about it as much of the play was contained in the centre of midfield. Oddly enough Jex were having little joy down the flanks as Lewis and Matty (and later Elliott) kept this threat at bay.

Mac and Shaun were now dominating central midfield for Jex and were looking ominous every time they came forward and we were struggling to contain them. Jex added another in the second half but Rizzo also notched up a close range goal as Luke’s powerful shot could only be pushed away by their keeper. The match ended 6-2 and everyone from Taverham knew that we could and should have done better today. Although it is pleasing to report hardworking performances from about 6 of our squad, the remainder really do need to look at their own contribution to this game. This was a game to stand up and be counted and although Jex had quality it was their desire and determination that won this match.

Our next league opponents, Catton, beat Jex last week and they have no PDC players or ex-academy stars but have a great team ethic that we should aspire to. They will be ready – will we?

Our Player of the day was Lewis who had another solid game at right back and did all the simple things very well.

Sun 9 Mar 08  Taverham v Fakenham (Friendly)
As we were without a league fixture today we took the opportunity to take on high flying Fakenham who are sitting top of the B league at present. We knew we were in for a tough challenge today, but with Riz & George seconded to our North Norfolk squad, we had added pressure. We kicked off in near perfect conditions with the following line up:

Tom in goal, our back four of Lewis, Elliott, Ellery & Matty, midfield of Joe, Dex, Christian and Archie with Luke and Ollie upfront. The pre match team talk and warm up routine was totally focused on corners. All defenders were encouraged to pick up a player and stay with him rather then attempt zonal marking – Liverpool may do it but the team above them don’t! Tom was encouraged to organize this and direct players to unmarked opponents.

From the start you could see that Fakenham would be no pushovers today as they looked well organized and strong. We started brightly with Ollie and Luke linking well from a throw down the left. Soon afterwards Fakenham were lucky not to concede a penalty as their central defender clearly handled the ball, but the ref was unsighted. Fakenham were certainly doing the most attacking but our corner routine was much improved from last week with Tom taking control and notably Dex and Luke making fine defensive headers from corners.

We were losing the battle in central midfield (how many times have I written that this year!) due to combination of poor control and wanting too many touches on the ball. We were also guilty of ball watching and not getting to grips with their number 15 who was without doubt the best player on the pitch. However, during the first half he had a free reign to do whatever he wanted. Despite our frailties, Tom was having an inspired game (even though he only had 3 hours sleep due to a sleepover). His handling, kicking and all round confidence kept us in the game.

Our defenders were doing their bit as Fakenham piled on the pressure.  Elliott was busy organizing, covering and displaying some cool defending and was to have another fine game. He has really risen to the challenge over the last few weeks and held things together today in the absence of George. Despite and early tackle with his backside, Lewis was keeping it simple and cleared  his lines effectively.

As the half wore on, Christian was starting to find his feet against his school mates and was played some searching balls for our attackers to chase. Despite his, now all too frequent nervous start, Matty was enforcing his “they shall not pass” motto but his distribution was still letting him down.  Ellery was equally doing the simple things well with no nonsense clearances and was getting first to the ball more as the half came to an end.

Just before the end of the first half Aiden retired injured and Joe came on at right midfield with Ollie pushing upfront, Dex moving to left midfield and Archie coming into centre midfield. Almost immediately Arch put in a super tackle on their number 15 to show him that size definitely did not matter! Ollie had been fairly quiet mainly due to some poor supply but also not helped by him not coming off his defender enough (note Ollie!). However, in the last 10 minutes of the half he came to the fore with a good header and a run on goal which was concluded with his getting out muscled in the box just as he was about to pull the trigger. Shortly afterwards he took an early shot from the edge of the box and looked disappointed with himself for not making more of the chance. Was it to be third time lucky for Ollie or would he vanish in the second half? As the whistle blew for full time it was 0-0.

At half time the Manager was keen to stress that we were being out battled and outplayed and all needed to lift their game. More concentration and patience were needed. With Aiden sidelined we had no subs and the formation was retained but Dex was to move to right midfield and Joe on the left – this proved to an inspired (or lucky!) decision and both lads had good second halves and our shape and balance looked better.

We began the half with a surging run from Dex down the right wing which was followed by a good ball to Luke to run onto. From an acute angle he shot just wide of the far post. Luke was again set free by Christian with a tremendous ball and managed to get in a thunderous shot which was well saved by their keeper. Shortly afterwards Lewis made a fine last ditch tackle to foil a dangerous looking counter attack from the visitors.

Ollie was now starting to buzz and it was his through ball which sent Luke free down the left but unfortunately he was unable to cross due to the heavy presence of Fakenham defenders. However, after 46 minutes our pressure paid off as it was third time lucky for Ollie. He burst through on goal and with the keeper advancing he made his mind up early and chipped the ball into the top right hand corner. A super piece of skill and confidence – we all know that he has all the skills in his kit bag – the challenge is getting him to deliver his potential week on week but when he does he can be a match winner for us.

Although we were now in the ascendancy we still had a job to do at the back and our back five looked well organized and strong (with the odd heart attack moment excepted!). Indeed it was an error which lead to Fakenham’s deserved equalizer 5 minutes from the end which meant the game ended 1-1 – a fair result from both teams’ viewpoint. Hopefully Fakenham can stay top of the B league as they will help strengthen the A league for next season and we look forward to meeting them again.

Today’s player of the day was Tom as he was inspirational throughout the 60 minutes and if he was that good with 3 hours sleep who knows how good he will be next week! More pleasing today was the team’s ability to retain full concentration for the entire match. All stuck to their tasks and contributed to a fine team display – well done lads!  Its Old Catton next week so time to renew our friendly rivalry with Keith and his lads- can’t wait!

Sun 16 Mar 08  Old Catton v Taverham
Today we travelled to play Old Catton who have already secured 3rd place in the league and are in the cup final for the second year running. All credit to an excellent team at Old Catton, who have no PDC players or ex NCFC academy lads. We have always had great games with Catton, but just lately they have managed to be too strong for us. What would today bring?

On a dreadful day, with a strong wind blowing up the pitch and constant rain since the evening before, our boys approached the game in calm and attentive mood as we discussed tactics for the coming match in the changing room. In the adjacent room Catton seemed to be noisy and full of fun and frolics. Had they underestimated us? Were they more concerned with the upcoming final? Had they found a stash of alcopops?  When the whistle blew Catton were fastest out of the blocks. Their first attack saw the lively Ethan skew his shot just past the post after a decisive run through the centre of our defence. This was a warning of Ethan’s intentions throughout the match, which saw our defence threatened by this lad’s electric pace. Where do Catton find these lads?

With Joe absent today, we took Bradley from the North Norfolk squad as they were without a game today. Thanks to Phil as Brad needed no introduction and was quick to win a defensive header in the box. Along with Christian in central midfield today, both work hard to break down the offensive intentions of Catton. Neither stopped working all game and both provided inspiration for the rest of the team to dig in deep. Our wide midfielders were Ollie and Aiden with Luke and Rizzo upfront. Our full backs today were Matty and Elliott with Ellery and George at the heart of defence.

With the wind behind our boys and the slope in our favour we knew we had to get something from the first half. After some uncertain defending, which saw us struggle to get the ball away, we began to settle down and Tom came to our rescue too many times for the Manager’s liking. George was to make a strong shoulder charge that would not have looked out of place in the Premiership to thwart the dangerous Ethan. Initially we were unable to relieve the pressure as, quite frankly; our work rate in midfield was not as high as Catton’s. Once we got to grips with this we were able to put pressure on the Catton backline, which did not look as certain as in previous games. Rizzo was chasing down everything and was brimming with confidence.

After 10 minutes the break through came, as Tom took full advantage of the wind and drop kicked a tremendous clearance, which was taken on by Luke into the box. Luke confidently made the most of our first real chance and buried the ball in the far corner. Shortly after the kick off we lost a 50/50 challenge in centre midfield and the Catton player ran through and let fly. Tom pushed the ball round the post and we all breathed a sign of relief. Soon after this it was our turn to apply the pressure as Aiden was set free on the right and was just beaten to the ball by the advancing keeper. It was all Taverham now as Luke delivered a speculative lob from the edge of the box and the follow up shot from Rizzo went just past the post.

With confidence racing through the veins of our back four, Ellery was now organizing and directing proceedings at the back. It was the Catton backline which looked shaky as Rizzo chased another chance but was just beaten to the ball by the keeper. With 20 minutes gone it was time for a change and Dex replaced Ollie in the right hand side of midfield and Archie came on for Aiden on the left. The boys coming on got into the game immediately, and with Brad and Christian, worked hard at containing Catton whilst helping us push for another goal. This seemed to compose us more with Christian and Rizzo now looking to put their foot on the ball and break the cycle of kick and rush football which had been seen previously.

On 27 minutes Christian delivered a telling Corner from the right and after three previous efforts on goal it was Rizzo from close range who stabbed the ball home to make it 2-0. As the whistle blew for half time we knew we had a bigger battle the second and Catton would not lie down and accept defeat.

Being 2-0 up against a team which were two places above us in the league seemed to unnerve the lads. After hesitation in defence and basic errors Catton pulled one back on 31 minutes. They must have thought Christmas had come early 2 minutes later when Catton got back on equal terms! On 39 minutes Catton took the lead for the first time.  The Manager was keen to see a reaction from our lads; and he got one a minute later.

Our pre-match chat was all about getting the ball down and playing but it was not until 40 minutes we actually did this. Luke picked up the ball deep in the centre circle and sent a delightful through ball down the right wing to Rizzo which was expertly crossed in. Christian took it first time on his trusty right foot and it flashed in at the near post with the keeper having no chance – a tremendous response. It was so pleasing to see simple pass and move football delivered with such devastating affect. 3-3 and all to play for.

Shortly afterwards Christian was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box which seemed a harsh decision from the sideline but justice appeared to have been done when the ball was blazed over the bar. Was this to be our day after all? On 40 minutes Lewis replaced Matty and Tom, against a strong head wind, thumped a ball out wide to Dex who sent in a super cross which was met on the full by Archie and we led 4-3. With all three points as the prize the Manager asked Brad to sit in front of the back four to protect what we had. Luke came off for Ollie and Archie took a breather and was replaced by Aiden. Ollie was quick to show some sublime skill as he took down the ball with the outside of his foot and delivered a smashing ball down the left wing. Unfortunately this advance came to nothing.

Our ambitions of a fourth place finish were dashed Catton took full advantage of the wind from a corner and headed an equalizer after 55 minutes. It was 4-4 and surely we would not throw it all away? Not if Tom had anything to do with it as he acrobatically tipped over a powerful shot from the edge of our box. It was Tom’s last act of defiance in a match where he was at his brilliant best for much of the game but paid the price for a couple of moments of indecision.

All in all this was a terrific game of football on dreadful day. Our boys have provided they are good enough to compete with the best and with better fortune all the points would have been ours. The Manager was quick to point out at the end of the game how proud he was with ALL the lads today even if he nearly had 3 heart attacks on the sideline. A special word for our Assistant Referee, Ryan, who had a fine game with the flag.

Next stop, the North Walsham Tournament.

Sat/Sun 22/23 Mar 08  North Walsham Tournament

As a distraction from our league games we entered the Canary Cup which took place at North Walsham FC. We had mixed feelings of this tournament based on a previous occasion when we finished runners up and conditions were so muddy that the lads looked liked they had swam a drainage dyke. With arctic weather conditions predicted for the weekend we all feared the worst especially as our 13 player squad was reduced to 12 on the Thursday before then to a bare 11 at 6am on the day!

We arrived at 8am on the first day and were greeted with horizontal rain. However, the boys took it in their stride especially the massive adult’s pitch and puddles of water on it. We had 4 games to play each day which were 11 minutes each half. Although nothing was said, the Manager was mindful that any injury would have a devastating affect on the boys’ chances and enjoyment. Prior to the match we erected the gazebo (gratefully supplied by Ollie’s Grandad) – at least we could make sure the boys stayed dry and warm between games (or so we thought!).

Our match was with Fur and Feather from Liverpool . We took to the field with Tom in goal, Matty and Lewis at full back and George and Bradley in central defence. With team Captain Ellery not available, North Norfolk team Captain Bradley took the armband for the duration of the tournament. Rizzo and Luke were upfront and the midfield wide boys were Dex and Aiden with Christian and Joe in the middle. We took the lead but were pulled back to 1-1 by full time. Not a bad start but on returning to the gazebo we noticed it looked like it had been hit by a tornado despite being secured tightly when we left it. The boys sat under a hastily assembled collection of chairs and umbrellas and took it all in their stride as did their parents who were now at the mercy of the elements.

Our next match was against AFC Wimbledon (eventual league winners) who ran out comfortable 2-0 winners against us but clearly had not read the banners relating to “Fair Play” surrounding the pitch. With their coach taking up his position 10 metres on the pitch and his lads constantly diving and badgering the referee at every opportunity our lads did very well to control their discipline. They put their aggression into their tackles and AFC Wimbledon certainly knew they had been in a match. It would be a lie if we said that we wished them well after the match!

Being still slightly taken aback by the antics in the previous match, our lads took the field against West Bletchley and did not do themselves justice. Although this team eventually finished 3rd in the league, we went down 2-0 to them in a game we really could and should have won. Our last game was against Cromer and by now the boys were wet, cold and the pitches were very heavy. Pre match the Manager encouraged our lads to “have a real go and finish the day on a high”. Rizzo was moved to central midfield and Joe moved to left midfield with Dex going out wide right and Aiden accompanying Luke upfront. We kept this formation for the remainder of the tournament. This was to be our turning point of the weekend as we took the game to Cromer and thoroughly walloped them 6-0 – that made the ride home a bit more satisfying. The Manager was conscious the boys had played lots of football with no substitutions and they had to do it all again the next day. With no other players able to be added to the squad we all hoped and prayed that all the boys would be illness and injury free on the Sunday.

When we arrived on the Sunday the ground was covered with snow and a steady stream of the white stuff was descending on us (this kept up all day!). Although he was not at all well, Rizzo still came and after doses of Night Nurse, Lemsip and Anadin! What a team player he is both on and off the pitch. Our first game was against AFC Wimbledon’s other outfit (which eventually finished second in the league). Our lads had something to prove but this team played fair and gave us a good game. Despite not being able to see the lines and an inch of snow on the pitch, our lads took the game to the Wombles and deserved to win. Wimbledon made it 2-2 at the end of the game with a gratefully received penalty. With the weather getting worse and our confidence growing our next opponents decided to forfeit our next game and headed back home.

We then took the field against Irlam FC from Manchester whose players really did not look like they wanted to be there. Despite atrocious conditions our lads looked just the opposite and were unlucky to come in at half time without a goal being scored although the ball never came into our half. Our manager encouraged our lads to be positive and asked Matt and Lewis to get forward as often as they could. Although the ground was more like the trenches of World War One we played some super football and game out as 3-0 winners. The highlight was a wonderful move involving central square balls passes between Rizzo and Christian which found Lewis on the overlap who put a perfectly weighted pass to Dex to take on and bang into the far top corner.

Our final match was against Gray’s which finally finished fourth in the league (one place above us). We completely outplayed these boys who did not adapt to the conditions as well as us. Despite having the ball in their net, Aiden’s “winning” header was adjudged to be offside and the game ended without a goal.

Despite not progressing any further in the tournament, this weekend was a real plus for our boys. Despite dreadful conditions, none of the boys moaned about the adversity and jelled really well as a team and were a credit to Taverham FC. This will stand them in good stead for their footballing and social futures. The Manager would also like to convey his thanks to the parents for giving up their Easter weekend to support their boys – tremendous – we just could not do it without you! As this was a super team performance I felt that each of them deserves a mention:

Tom – super handling and great saves in tricky conditions

Matty & Lewis – immense defending and also some tremendous attacking play down the flanks

George & Brad – do or die defending and super positional awareness

Rizzo & Christian – held the middle of midfield with exceptional fitness, drive and vision

Dex – fantastic approach play and tackling back (oh and what a goal v Irlam!)

Joe – gave us width and skill coupled with sheer hard work

Aiden & Luke – worked so hard and caused defences all sorts of problems during the two days

Player of the Day was Christian who was really up for this game and was so strong and committed in central midfield. He led by example all the way through the tournament. Dex was a very close runner up.

Now lets secure 5th place in the league and get revenge against Hellesdon next week!

Sun 30 Mar 08  Taverham v Hellesdon
On a bright and sunny day our lads took the pitch determined to avenge their heaviest defeat this year. Based on our recent form and our league position we hoped that the larger than average crowd would have something to shout about. With Christian and Dex away this week a reshuffle of the team was needed. We set up with Tom in goal, Lewis at right back and George and Ellery in the middle of defence with Matty completing the back four. Our central midfield due were Rizzo and Elliott with Archie on the right and Joe on the opposite side. Luke and Aiden continued their partnership upfront and Ollie started as substitute.

Our lads started like a train with back four looking strong and Rizzo and Elliott gelling very quickly in centre midfield. Their hard work and ability to get the ball down and play was evident from the early stages of the match and continued throughout. Luke and Aiden looked lively upfront and were always keen to get involved. Luke had much to prove against his old team following his disappointing return there early this season. However, the star of the first half by a country mile was Archie. He worked so hard, showed some lovely touches and made some incisive passes. It was fitting he was on hand to lose his marker in the box after 15 minutes and skilful dispatch the cross from the left into the top of the net. This was no more than we deserved as we created chance after chance and Hellesdon could not respond. Our next attack a minute later saw Archie release Luke on the right who took the ball into the box. With a point to prove, he smashed the ball into the top left hand corner. Lewis was linking up well with Archie on the right and Matty was carrying the ball out of defence on his side with great confidence and making some crunching tackles. This was allowing Joe to get down the flank with great determination. George and Ellery were both looking calm and assured at the back with good organization, positioning and great timing.

As Archie had run himself ragged he came off for a well deserved breather. He was greeted with a fantastic ovation from our supporters when he  was replaced by Ollie, who was quick to get into the action. Ollie soon set about playing some super pass and move football with Lewis and Rizzo and showed some sublime skill. Hellesdon were really up against it and we were flying. On 22 minutes Aiden slipped his marker down the left wing and, from an acute angle, pulled the ball back which was converted by a Hellesdon defender. This was particularly pleasing as a minute earlier Aiden had been in the same position and tried to do the same thing with his right (or wrong!) foot and we lost the initiative. It was really great to see him make the change with such devastating effect.

For the last 5 minutes of the half we eased off the pressure and allowed our defence to get a touch of the ball. The Manager was conscious that Hellesdon were still dangerous and we needed to make sure they did not get a foothold back into the game. As the half time whistle blew the boys came in having given their all both offensively and defensively. The concern was that they could keep up such a high work rate for the second half. The concerns were unfounded as our boys continued to show great strength and some super attacking play. The remainder of the match was a battle of attrition in central midfield with Elliott and Rizzo working so tirelessly and putting in some really strong challenges. Luke was using his aggression to positive affect and was a constant thorn in their side. Matty was having a great game by making some telling challenges and using his pace and strength to good effect. Joe made way for Archie midway through the match but our balance was not affected and we continued to attack Hellesdon. Lewis, George and Ellery were rocks in defence and would not give and inch. Tom was now getting a chance to do his bit as Hellesdon tried to get back in the match. His handling was good and positioning well chosen.

On 52 minutes Rizzo won the ball in central midfield and lofted the ball forward for Luke to chase. Having just come back on the pitch, after taking a break with an injury, Luke replaced Aiden. With the ball bouncing at his feet he skilfully lobbed the advancing keeper for a magnificent goal to double his tally. This made it 4-0 and there was no way Hellesdon had time to score five. However with the last kick of the game they did score a consolation with a superbly executed free kick. This did little to dampen our enthusiasm on a day which had seen the lads grow as individuals and, more importantly, as a team. Everyone contributed today, but today’s player of the day was Rizzo who never stopped working and always looked to get the ball down and play.

Our last league game is against Lakeford. This is another opportunity to avenge a defeat earlier in the season when our situation was vastly different to now. It would be nice to finish the season as strongly as possible in readiness for the challenges next year will bring.

Sun 6 Apr 08  Norman U12s v Taverham
In very wintry conditions we visited Sloughbottom Park for a friendly against Norman under 12s. Given our good recent form this was an opportunity for us to pit our wits against opposition who were currently sitting second bottom in the U12 A league. The pre-match team talk was very much about treating this game with the right attitude and to try and match them physically as well as getting the ball down and playing.

Our formation today was 4:4:2 with Tom in goal, Matty, George, Ellery and Lewis at the back. In midfield we started with Archie and Joe out wide and Christian and Elliott in the middle (this changed too many times in the match to mention!). Ollie and Luke led the attack with Rizzo and Aiden on the bench. Although we started brightly enough we conceded an early goal after 5 minutes following too much over elaborate play on the left hand side. However, 10 minutes later we equalized when a throw from Matty on the left was met by Ollie, who did well to find Christian on the edge of the box. He needed no invitation to shoot and placed a powerful drive into the top right hand corner of the goal with the keeper beating all hands up. A fantastic way to get back on equal terms.

The next 10 minutes saw us cope with heavy pressure from Norman who were causing us trouble every time they launched an aerial attack in the box. Lewis saved us with a super goal line clearance, but halfway through the first half a mistake in defence saw us give away a soft goal and it was 2-1 to Norman. We dug in and matched Norman physically but it was Tom who was the busier of the two keepers. His next job was to pick the ball out of the back of the net for the third time on 25 minutes when a superbly executed free kick from just outside the box flew into the top right hand corner.

The score was 3-1 to Norman at halftime and our Manager attempted to rally his troops as some of the lads looked a bit overwhelmed by Norman. As a team we were not putting in the same levels of efforts as seen the preceding week. It was time to roll up those sleeves again and have a good go. We had looked the better footballing team but, with exception of Elliott, no one was putting their foot on it and looking to play our passing game. One positive of the first half was the partnership of Ellery and George at the heart of defence where they both looked comfortable together and displayed good positional play.

The second half was another matter entirely as we, not only matched Norman physically, but began to play some nice build up play down the flanks. Rizzo moved into central midfield and Aiden moved upfront (his understanding with Luke was there for all to see). Rizzo was combative in the centre and worked well again with the impressive Elliott who barely put a foot wrong all game. After 20 minutes of the restart it was Aiden who continued his recent excellent goal scoring form with a bizarre goal as he side-footed the ball in from close range. Their keeper could do nothing about it as he was caught up in the net! According to their manager this lad is from The Congo and does not speak a word of English and such unusual behaviour is his trademark. Game on and nothing more than we deserved. However, despite having numerous chances we could not add to our tally and it was a counter attack on 60 minutes that put pay to our resistance. A long ball was picked up by their striker who ran strongly into our box. As he was about to strike on goal, Elliott who had ran with him all the way. put in despairing challenge which took more player than ball and the resultant penalty was duly converted to make it 4-2. This spoke volumes about Elliott’s performance today, not only was he calm and sure footed with his passing whilst going forward. He worked so hard in supporting his defence and kept his cool under some pretty heavy provocation from his opposite number. He thoroughly deserved winning player of the day. As for the team – this was another good lesson where the result was insignificant with our development along that learning curve more crucial.

Our under 12s (having won their league with 3 games to play) were down to 10 for their away match against Poringland in the afternoon so Rizzo was asked to play and play he did! He had a stunning game and also scored one of the 6 goals which Taverham scored without reply. His U11 Manager and his Father saw him proudly accept the player of the day trophy – well done that man.

Our next game is our last league fixture of the season against cup finalists Lakeford. Bring it on!
