Sun 18 Nov 07 Taverham v Bressingham

After a disappointing loss last weekend to a very average Norwich Utd side the lads were in a sombre mood before today's clash with Bressingham. In recent seasons Bressingham have been a formidable side and have always been tough opposition. After the pre match confidence boosting talk they were eager to prove a point and move forward in true Taverham spirit.

Taverham started well and dominated for a good twenty minutes of the first half, although Bressingham still had several breaks within this time and with our defence still looking a bit shaky they failed to make anything of the few early chances they had. Just after the 20 minute mark Taverham took the lead with a well taken goal by Lloyd, after this we took the game to Bressingham and duly scored 2 more to go in at half time a comfortable 3-0 up.

In the second half an early mistake from a free kick in our own half saw a quick goal from the visitors which gave them a boost to get back into the game. However this was short lived with another goal from the home side. Once again though, our defensive nerves gave way gifting Bressingham another soft goal to bring the score to 4-2. Eventually the team settled down and managed to put the game out of the visitors reach with 2 more goals, and the final score was a pretty convincing win 8-3 to Taverham.

Overall an ok performance from Taverham, but we will need to return to our form of a few weeks previous if we wish to finish in the top 3 of the division, a position which we have become accustomed to and are not going to give up lightly. Goals came from Matty (4) Lubbo (2) and Lloyd and Jordy 1 each. Man of the match was Lubbo closely followed by Morley and Matty.

Sun 25 Nov 07  Taverham v Fakenham
Fakenham were the visitors this week to Fortress Hinks Meadow, having won the B League quite convincingly last season they were now finding it tough going in the top flight.

After the pre match coaching and morale boosting talk the lads were in a confident mood. Only 5 minutes into the game and we had stormed into a 3-0 lead and were looking superb. Our only fear at this stage was that we did not embarrass Fakenham by getting a rugby type score!

Unfortunately for us the visitors rode out the storm and settled into the game, after about 15 minutes they had pulled a goal back, yet again though Taverham responded with another ruthless attack making it 4-1. Sadly another bad and disappointing half from what at one time has been a steadfast back four saw us go in a half time 4-3 up having squandered what should have been a 4-0 lead, not to mention several excellent saves from the Fakenham keeper and the woodwork as well.

Following several strong words from myself and Ian at half time the lads went out in a determined mood. They scored straight away (5-3) and this time pushed on without any mercy for the opposition. A truly awesome display from Taverham in the second half totally demolished Fakenham with the final score line a 12-3 win to the blues. Well done to Lloyd who did well to organise and lift the back four in the second half steadying what had been a jelly like defence in the first half.

Exceptional performances throughout the team, especially going forward we looked unstoppable, Men of the match were Matty and Luke. Some more great performances from Connor and Ryan as well. Goals were scored by Ryan 4, Matty 3, Charlie 2, Paul 2, and Lewis N 1.

Next week we have the opportunity to show Norwich Utd what Taverham U13s can do when were firing on all four cylinders!! (I hope), and overturn a disappointing result to them a few weeks ago.

Sun 2 Dec 07  Taverham v Norwich Utd (Cup)
Taverham were looking for revenge this week after a disappointing performance against Norwich Utd a few weeks ago in the League. Although we had a few players out I was still confident of a Taverham victory and the lads seemed to be up for it.

Within 3 minutes we had taken the lead with a great goal from Ryan who pounced on a slight goalkeeping error from the Nowich GK. A great start and I thought we could now settle down and get into our stride. Apparently not.. My happiness was short lived as straight from the kick the visitors played a long ball through the middle and finished well, making the score equal after only 5 minutes. Surely the defence wasn't going to crumble again?

In a tough 30 minutes which followed, Taverham battled hard against a very well organised opposition, goal scoring opportunities were few and far between but a couple of half chances we had were not taken and again these proved to be costly by the end of the match. Having said that; Matty's work rate and battling was superb, as was that of his fellow striker Ryan. Eventually we went in 2-1 down at half time and were surprised by the fact that they had scored 2 goals from what had genuinely been two attacks into our half.

A half time chat to try and install some confidence in the back four and bring out some gutsy performances from the lads was taken onboard and again I was reasonably confident they could still win the game. We were just so wobbly and disorganised in defence, unfortunately our usual centre back Lloyd was in goal covering for a missing Nathan.

Not long after the break Norwich Utd had stretched their lead to 3-1. Could this be it for us now? Credit to the lads they battled away and were shortly back into the game with a nice chip over the keeper by Lewis; 2-3 with about 20 minutes left. Could we get back level and go onto win or a least get extra time?

Sadly Norwich Utd were wise to our weakness in the defence; throughout the second half and indeed the whole game they soon came to realise that a long ball down the middle of the pitch or over the top would mean a guaranteed break and attack on goal. For some reason our defence could not work out what to do and to be honest looked as if they wished it could all end. A couple more defensive clangers and GK mistakes let the visitors stamp out any chance we had of getting back into the game.

Final score Taverham 2-5 Norwich Utd. A disappointing result with basic defending costing us again. During the match Taverham probably had 60% of the ball but were unable to wear down a strong and determined opposition. Although Norwich Utd played very well they genuinely had relatively few shots on target, they took their chances which you have to give them credit for. Having said that, they were a very well organised team, always having at least 5 players back when defending yet still managing to get players forward when attacking.

Back to the training ground next week and I think we'll be working on our defence

Sunday 12 Jan 08  Taverham v Sprowston
The League leaders Sprowston visited today and were in a confident mood, hardly surprising considering they are sitting at the top of the division with a plus GD of 77 and won all 13 games played so far.

However Taverham were as usual up for the big game and despite a recent dip in performance, results and attitude the lads had promised me things were going to change for the better and they seemed as if they were ready and proud to play for Taverham FC under 13's again.

The first thing which was easily noticeable about the Sprowston team was the size of them! They were big lads, this was not going to be easy for the somewhat normal 13 year old sized Taverham team. However what a fantastic start by Taverham. We were by far the better team for the first 15 minutes and I should know as I was refereeing the match. We were first to the ball, passing well, tackling hard etc etc, it was a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately, or should I say unbelievably, after twenty minutes we were 2 goals down, purely through two long balls played down the middle which caught us out. Having said that from two opportunities they scored two goals which is what class teams do. The rest of the first half was very physical from both teams and it was pretty much even all the way although Sprowston looked to be getting better and more settled as the game went on. However 5 minutes from the first half ending Taverham were awarded a penalty for a blatant hand ball. Ryan stepped up to the spot and fired a great penalty only to have it saved by a pint sized Sprowston GK who had already made several great saves.

Taverham were still in the game and within 5 minutes of the second half we were back in it, a lovely cross from the right wing followed up by a great header into the top corner by Jordy. Game on I thought Taverham were well up for this now. Sprowston had other ideas though almost straight from the kick they responded and scored again, to many half hearted clearances and miss kicks in the 6 yard box had cost us again. Not long after this another weak goal was conceded with Nathan being beaten on his nearside post, of course helped again from a lack of strong defending Sprowston pounced on the opportunity. From this point things were going to be tough but Taverham battled on making several chances including Sprowston clearing 2 chances from their own goal line, not to mention their GK who made some more fantastic saves. Still pushing on Taverham managed to get back to 4-2 but were running out of time and energy to get another 2 goals back.

The game finished 4-2 to Sprowston who were in truth the stronger team but I was very proud of the lads today. Man of the Match was Lloyd who defended like a trojan all game and has done most of the season but being a defender it rarely gets a mention so well done to him. The usual suspects Conner, Morley, and Matty worked their socks off and deserve extra credit but this week They all worked very hard and played superb. I think they gave the visitors a game they won't forget in a hurry.

A Taverham of old performance, well done lads.
